Today my very favorite pen has dried up. It took a lot of pressing for it to even write this little squiggle, so it looks as if today is it’s last day on this earth as my favorite pen. This is Bic Ultimates’s story.

He was abandoned one day, probably by some preoccupied girl who never truly appreciated its handling and ease of use, until I found it. This pen, lying on the floor of my high school hallway in 2007. It had no cap, but even then it braved the world and surely many crushing footsteps to prove it was still worth living. I wanted to help it through its journey.

I took it as my own. I gave it a cap. It didn’t exactly match, it was a black cap from some other long-lost pen. But it did the job, keeping it’s precious ink safely protected from the harsh dry air of everyday living. I showed it what I knew of the world, it helped me and I helped it. I provided the words and it wrote, it wrote and wrote. It truly was a master of ink, sliding over paper like skates on ice. Gracefully, we completed my assignments together.

High School ended, but I vowed to keep it by my side as long as it’d still write. We wrote numbers together in check books. It wrote my signature beautifully. We wrote notes on post-its for my mother to read later. I don’t think she ever truly understood its talent.

After 5 years of writing together, Bic Ultimates has begun to dry up. Its strokes are no longer smooth. They look dry and spotty, as if they were written on sandpaper. Its lived the good life. It was never abandoned again, never lost under the shelf or desk that you never look under. It was always by my side, at the ready, until its final day. I will always remember it in its prime. I will always remember how beautifully it wrote. I will always remember my favorite pen.
